The project
A 1928 salt warehouse kept almost exactly as found and turned into a food hall, with forty studios built on top in lightweight steel.
The warehouse was scheduled for demolition. A survey showed the concrete frame had decades left in it. Keeping it saved roughly 3,900 tonnes of CO₂e against a new build of the same size.
We cleaned the salt-stained columns and left them unpainted. The new kitchens, stalls and services hang from the existing frame. The rooftop studios are steel and glass and can be taken down without touching the old building.
