The project

A neighbourhood library with a hall that stays open after the books close. The hall is booked 300 evenings a year.

The brief asked for a library. The neighbourhood asked for a room. We gave the community hall its own door to the square and its own heating zone, so it can open at 22:00 without lighting the reading hall.

The reading hall sits under three north-facing roof lights. Its glulam columns sit on a 4.5 m grid that matches the shelving, so the layout can change without moving a single bracket.
